Dr. Starr is a Professor of Neurological Surgery at UCSF and co-director of the Surgical Movement Disorders Clinic. He specializes in functional neurosurgery, using implanted devices to treat conditions like Parkinson’s, dystonia, and tremor. His NIH-funded research focuses on how movement disorders affect brain networks and how neurostimulation can be improved. He was a pioneer in using electrocorticography to study Parkinson’s and led the first implant of a chronic multi-site brain recording device in a patient. He also helped develop a new MRI-guided technique for precise brain surgery.
